DescriptionScenes from the Virgin Mary's childhood, such as the one depicted in this unusual composition, underscore the importance of devotion to the Mother of God in the Spanish colonies in America. These and their European counterparts were inspired by apocryphal texts not accepted into the Church's canon, such as the Protoevangelium of James, which recounts her life from conception in the womb of Saint Anne to the infancy of Jesus Christ.
